Warp Length & Yarn Calculator for Weavers

Running out of warp mid-project, or buying twice the yarn you need, both come from the same gap: not calculating before you wind. This article shows you how to work out warp length, number of ends, and total yarn quantity so you warp with confidence and buy the right amount once.

The four numbers you need

Every warp calculation rests on four inputs. Get these and the rest is arithmetic.

  • Finished width you want, in inches or cm.
  • Sett, the ends per inch (epi) suited to your yarn and weave.
  • Finished length of the piece, times the number of pieces.
  • Allowances for take-up, shrinkage, and loom waste.

Step 1: Number of ends (warp threads)

Multiply the width in the reed by the sett. Weave a little wider than your finished width because cloth draws in and shrinks. A common working rule is to plan the width in the reed about 10 percent wider than the finished width for many yarns, but this varies, so use your sample.

Example: you want a 8-inch finished scarf in a yarn set at 12 epi. Plan roughly 9 inches in the reed. 9 x 12 = 108 ends.

Step 2: Warp length per piece

Add three things to your finished length:

  • Take-up: warp bends over weft as it weaves, using length. Often around 10 percent, more in thick yarns or firm beats.
  • Shrinkage: washing pulls the cloth in. Wool can shrink noticeably; cotton less. Your sample tells you the real figure.
  • Fringe or hem: add what the finishing needs.

A practical combined allowance of 15 to 20 percent for take-up plus shrinkage is a reasonable starting point, then refine with a sample.

Step 3: Loom waste

Loom waste is warp you cannot weave: the length tied to the front and back, plus thrums. It does not scale with project length, so it hurts short warps most. Typical loom waste runs about 18 to 27 inches (45 to 70 cm) depending on your loom and tie-on method. Add it once per warp, not per piece.

Step 4: Total warp yarn

Total warp length = (finished length + allowances) x number of pieces + loom waste. Then total warp yarn = that length x number of ends.

Worked example

Two scarves, each 60 inches finished, 108 ends, wool at 12 epi.

  • Length with 20 percent allowance: 60 x 1.20 = 72 inches per scarf.
  • Two scarves: 72 x 2 = 144 inches.
  • Add loom waste 24 inches: 168 inches = 14 feet warp length.
  • Total warp yarn: 14 ft x 108 ends = 1,512 feet, about 504 yards.

Now check your yarn label’s yards per unit weight to convert to grams or skeins, and add a small margin so you are not buying to the exact inch.

Don’t forget weft

Weft is a separate quantity. A rough estimate: for a balanced weave, weft use is close to warp use in the woven area (not counting loom waste and fringe). Multiply picks per inch by woven width and length. When in doubt, buy weft and warp from the same dye lot if the same color, so a shortage doesn’t force a mismatch.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

  • Forgetting loom waste. The single most common way to run short on a short warp. Always add it once, up front.
  • Skipping the sample. Take-up and shrinkage are guesses until you wash a swatch. Weave, wash, measure, then calculate.
  • Calculating on finished width instead of reed width. Multiply sett by the wider width in the reed, or you’ll wind too few ends.
  • No safety margin. Buy slightly over. Dye lots change, and yarn breaks happen.
  • Mixing units. Keep everything in one unit until the final conversion to avoid decimal errors.
