How Much Yarn Do You Need for Weaving?

Running out of yarn mid-warp is one of the few weaving mistakes you cannot fix on the loom. Total: roughly 465 yards. Add a safety margin of about 10 percent and buy around 510 yards. If warp and weft are the same yarn, one figure covers both.
Turning yards into what you buy
Yarn is sold by weight, so you need the yield, or yards per pound (ypp), printed on the label or in a yarn chart. For example, 8/2 unmercerized cotton is often around 3,360 ypp. Divide your total yards by the ypp to get pounds, then convert to grams (1 pound is about 454 grams). Always round up to whole cones or skeins, and prefer buying from a single dye lot.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Forgetting loom waste. The single most common shortfall. Measure your loom’s real waste and always include it.
- Using finished width instead of width in the reed. Calculate ends from the reed width, or you will thread too few.
- Ignoring wet-finishing shrinkage. Wool and loosely spun cotton can shrink noticeably. Sample and measure.
- Guessing PPI. Weft estimates swing wildly with PPI. Take it from a woven sample, not from hope.
- Buying exactly the calculated amount. Breakage, sampling, and threading errors eat yarn. Add a margin.
